Accelerated Underwriting

What Is Accelerated Underwriting?

Accelerated underwriting is a streamlined life insurance application process that allows eligible Canadians to obtain coverage faster, often without undergoing traditional medical exams or blood tests.

Instead of requiring extensive medical testing for every applicant, insurance companies use health questionnaires, existing information, and data analysis to assess risk and determine eligibility.

Accelerated underwriting can reduce waiting times, simplify applications, and make purchasing life insurance more convenient. However, approval is not guaranteed, and insurers may still request additional medical information.

How Does Accelerated Underwriting Work in Canada?

When applying for life insurance in Canada, the insurer evaluates your personal and medical information to determine your eligibility and premiums.

With accelerated underwriting, this process typically involves:

  1. Completing an application: You provide information about your age, health, medical history, occupation, and lifestyle.
  2. Risk assessment: The insurer uses automated systems, predictive models, and underwriting guidelines to evaluate your application.
  3. Additional verification: Depending on your risk profile, the insurer may request medical records, blood tests, or other information.
  4. Underwriting decision: Eligible applicants may receive approval sooner without completing traditional medical examinations.

For example, a healthy 30-year-old living in Ontario who applies for $500,000 in term life insurance may qualify for accelerated underwriting, depending on the insurer's eligibility criteria.

Who Qualifies for Accelerated Underwriting?

Eligibility requirements vary among Canadian life insurance companies. Insurers generally consider:

  • Your age and current health.
  • Personal and family medical history.
  • Smoking status and lifestyle habits.
  • The amount and type of insurance requested.
  • Existing insurance coverage and other risk factors.

Applicants with complex medical histories may require traditional medical underwriting.

Accelerated Underwriting vs. Traditional Underwriting

The primary difference is the amount of medical evidence required and the time needed to assess an application.

Traditional medical underwriting may involve physical examinations, laboratory tests, and detailed medical records.

Accelerated underwriting uses technology and existing information to reduce unnecessary testing for eligible applicants.

Importantly, accelerated underwriting is not the same as guaranteed-issue life insurance. Applicants must still satisfy the insurer's eligibility requirements.
