Age Last Birthday

What Is Age Last Birthday?

Age last birthday is an insurance pricing method that calculates your age based on your most recent birthday. It represents your actual age in completed years rather than your age at your next birthday.

In Canada, some insurance products use age last birthday to determine eligibility, premiums, and coverage conditions. However, other insurers use a different method called age nearest birthday.

Understanding how your insurance age is calculated can help you compare life insurance quotes more accurately.

How Does Age Last Birthday Work in Canada?

Under the age last birthday method, your insurance age changes only when you reach your next birthday.

For example, suppose an Ontario resident turned 35 on January 15, 2026.

If they apply for life insurance in October 2026, their age last birthday is still 35, even though they are approaching their 36th birthday.

Their insurance age would change to 36 on January 15, 2027.

If the insurer uses this method, the applicant's premium is calculated using age 35, alongside other factors such as health, smoking status, and coverage amount.

Age Last Birthday vs. Age Nearest Birthday

The main difference is when your insurance age increases.

  • Age last birthday: Uses the age you reached on your most recent birthday.
  • Age nearest birthday: Uses the age you are closest to, meaning your insurance age may increase approximately six months before your next birthday.

For example, someone who is 35 years and eight months old would be considered 35 under age last birthday but 36 under age nearest birthday.

Canadian insurers may use different methods depending on the insurance product.

Why Does Age Last Birthday Matter?

Understanding this pricing method can help Canadians:

  • Compare life insurance quotes using the correct insurance age.
  • Understand why premiums differ between insurance companies.
  • Plan when to apply for coverage.
  • Avoid confusion about age-related eligibility requirements.

Your age is only one factor affecting premiums. Health, lifestyle, coverage amount, and underwriting results also matter.
