Age Nearest Birthday

What Is Age Nearest Birthday?

Age nearest birthday is an insurance pricing method that calculates your age based on whichever birthday is closest to the date your policy takes effect, whether it is your last birthday or your upcoming one.

In Canada, many life insurance companies use this method to determine insurance age, which can influence premiums and coverage eligibility.

This means your insurance age may increase before your actual birthday, potentially affecting how much you pay for coverage.

How Does Age Nearest Birthday Work in Canada?

Under the age nearest birthday method, insurers generally round your age to the nearest whole year.

For example, suppose an Ontario resident turns 35 on January 15, 2026.

If they apply for life insurance on April 15, 2026, their insurance age would be 35 because their last birthday is closer.

However, if their policy takes effect on October 15, 2026, their insurance age would be 36 because their next birthday is closer.

The insurer may therefore calculate premiums using age 36, even though the applicant is still 35.

Age Nearest Birthday vs. Age Last Birthday

The main difference is when your insurance age increases.

  • Age nearest birthday: Your insurance age generally increases approximately six months after your last birthday.
  • Age last birthday: Your insurance age increases only when you reach your actual birthday.

For example, someone aged 40 years and eight months would be considered 41 under age nearest birthday but 40 under age last birthday.

Why Does Age Nearest Birthday Matter?

Understanding this method can help Canadians:

  • Compare premiums: Insurance companies may use different age calculation methods.
  • Plan applications: Applying before your insurance age increases may help you qualify for a lower initial premium.
  • Understand pricing: Age is an important factor in determining life insurance costs.
  • Avoid surprises: Your quoted insurance age may differ from your actual age.

Some insurers permit policy backdating to preserve a younger insurance age, subject to their rules and additional premiums.
